RELATED WORKS:
Robert W. Firestone, PhD, clinical psychologist, author, theorist and artist, has devoted his life’s work to the study of resistance to progress in psychotherapy and people’s resistance to experiencing a warmer, more constructive environment in general. He has developed a comprehensive body of written work explaining how psychological defenses that are formed early in life become crystallized in the personality as children face a dawning awareness of death’s finality.  From that time forward death anxiety, largely unconscious, drives the defense system.  Later the same defenses that eased the pain of childhood trauma act to impair people’s ability to function personally and professionally.  They interfere with people sustaining intimate adult relationships and have a damaging effect on their children. In 1957, following his initial work as a psychotherapist with schizophrenic patients under the auspices of Dr. John N. Rosen, Dr. Firestone summarized his conceptualizations about schizophrenia in a theoretical dissertation entitled “A Concept of the Schizophrenic Process.” From 1957 to 1979, he was fully engaged in the private practice of psychotherapy, working with a wide range of patients, expanding his original ideas on schizophrenia and applying these concepts to a theory of neurosis.  In 1979, he joined the Glendon Association, a non-profit organization, as its consulting theorist. His major publications include The Fantasy Bond, Compassionate Child-Rearing, Fear of Intimacy and Beyond Death Anxiety. He has published eight other books, more than 30 professional articles and chapters for edited volumes, and produced 35 video documentaries. His art can be viewed on www.theartofrwfirestone.com
